Before the 1920s it was an easy decision, a foot-powered push scooter or none at all. But once Gino Tsai from Shanghai, Taiwan developed the Razor scooter it changed everything. His motor scooters became popular so quickly there were people waiting in line for six months before they could get one.

In the 1950s companies like Vespa in the UK started selling the first of their gas motor scooters. It was a big hit at the 1950 Motorcycle Show and quickly became a big hit in the UK as well. Vespa sold over 125,000 in the UK between the years of 1950 to 1958. Piaggio from Vespa and Lambretta from Innocenti started selling their models in Italy and France too, quickly becoming the vehicles that everyone had to own. By the early 1950s the sale of motor scooters topped 1 million a year in France alone. Because of its popularity other countries such as France and Germany decided to get in on the boom by manufacturing their own models.

Today, after more than 50 years since the first gas scooters appeared, there are many different makes and models. We have electric, gas powered, foldable, mobility and utility motor scooters dotting the globe. There are specialized scooters for just about every task. They have become a worldwide phenomenon because they are cheap to own, economical to operate, are very handy and functional, and most of all they are a lot of fun. But with all of the makes and models which one is right for you?

Let’s start with the different types. Gas motor scooters are the fastest around. They will take you longer distances and reach higher speeds than any of the other varieties. There are smaller and lighter models that will be perfect for running errands around town while the larger and heavier touring models will take you on longer trips. Plus, the larger the gas tank the farther you can travel before needing to stop at a service station.

Electric varieties are a little more economical to run, but will usually travel only about 10 or 15 miles before needing a recharge. Their battery capacity has improved dramatically over the years, but they cannot be taken for long trips due to the fact that their batteries will need recharging periodically. However, for short trips around the city they are wonderful little vehicles. Plus, most scooters have a large storage capacity under the seat so they are ideal for trips to the grocery store or for other light shopping sprees.

The elderly or handicapped typically use what is referred to as mobility scooters. These are usually electric models and have 3 or 4 wheels for extra stability. These models give the elderly or disabled the ability to get about in their homes or around the neighborhood more easily. Without mobility scooters many of the disability-impaired would be confined to their beds.

Another very popular type is the foldable scooter. These are very small and are made for short trips around town. They are particularly popular among the younger crowds. The beauty of these models is that they are extremely compact and can be folded for storage in small places. If you work just a few miles from your home you can travel to work on your folding scooter and then fold it up and put it underneath your desk at work. Very handy.

There are also utility scooters which can be used for many different purposes. They can be used as golf carts or for hauling things. Many big businesses use these types for getting around their factories. Schools use them for driving through the parking lot, checking for cars that shouldn’t be there. Major league sports stadiums use them to drive people from one place to another. These are wonderful vehicles that can be used for a variety of reasons.

Once you’ve decided which type is right for your needs the next step is to figure out what options, if any, you would like included on your vehicle. Of course you can choose from many different colors and designs, but there are other options available to you. You can choose from the many varieties of covers, locks (for security), cases or side bags for storage, helmets, seats, handgrips, windshields or windscreens, backrests for touring, chrome kits, rear luggage racks and many more options. The list of accessories can go on for quite some time.

As a rule of thumb first choose the type of scooter you want, whether it be electric, gas, foldable or utility. This is the easy part because the type you purchase will depend upon your needs. Once that decision has been made look at several popular models in your area and decide which one looks and feels right to you. Most have accessories that are manufactured for a specific model so accessories cannot be decided upon until you know which motor scooter you are going to buy. Once you’ve decided which accessories you want for the model you chose it’s a simple matter of driving your scooter out of the dealership. And it’s nothing but fun from there on out.

The lineage of the motorized scooter can be traced back almost as far as the invention of the motorcycle. Modern day scooters have retained many of the original character traits of the early designs but scooters really came into their own at the end of the Second World War when they became a very popular choice of cheap and affordable transport for post war torn Italy. The original Italian scooter company of Piaggio Vespa is still the largest maker of scooters in Europe having first been introduced and designed by the Italian motorcycle designer D’Ascanio. In recent decades Scooters from Japan have taken a large share of the scooter market worldwide with Japanese companies such as Yamaha and Honda producing many models in large quantities. Scooters have also become a cult symbol of the British 1960’s counter culture being the chosen form of transport of the fashion conscious MOD movement of the mid to late sixties.

The Scooter remains to this day and excellent choice of transport for the economical minded commuter and a part of that economical mind should also be applied to insurance. Scooters generally fall into the lower bracket of insurance groups and for that reason many affordable scooter insurance deals can be found online. Buy A Scooter From A Dealer Or Online?

More and more people are looking to scooters as an alternative method of transportation. Scooters are easy and fun to ride and are very economical. Many models boast a fuel consumption of over 100 MPG city driving.

Many people wonder if they should buy a scooter from an online dealer or a brick and mortar dealer. This question is very often confused with people wondering if they should by a big name brand Japanese scooter like Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki or an inexpensive, no brand, Chinese scooter.

The answer to the second question is not very complicated. If one has the means to buy a new Japanese or Italian brand name scooter, it goes without saying this would be the right decision. Japanese and Italian scooters are purchased from local dealers and come with a full warranty that also covers labor. The scooter is delivered to the buyer fully assembled and reviewed by the dealer. If anything goes wrong, all it takes is a trip to the dealer and they take care of it.

A 50cc Japanese scooter cost around $1950. A Chinese 50cc scooter cost around $800 online and $1200 from a dealer. Chinese scooters usually come with a 1 or 2 years power train parts only warranty. This means that the dealer does not cover any labor; only the engine and the transmission parts are covered.

Many people think it’s a good idea to buy a Chinese scooter from a local dealer. The thought of having a dealer take responsibility if the scooter needs repair is very comforting. There are other advantages for buying from a dealer, the customer can inspect the bike, and the dealer assembles it… Most dealers would give an around the block return policy, meaning it can be returned within the first 5 minutes of the purchase. Brick and mortar dealers do not usually cover any labor in the warranty. They may or may not guarantee parts availability.

Buying a scooter online may be a bit more complicated but many people think the savings are worth the extra effort. Buying a scooter online entails receiving the scooter, performing the 30 minutes to 1 hour uncrating and assembly and registering the scooter. For all mechanically inclined people with some tools, this is the way to go for sure.

So how does one who is not so mechanically inclined still save by buying a scooter online? A little more legwork, do some research. Select the best 3 online scooter dealers found read their purchase agreement and their FAQ. Find answers to all these questions: What is the return policy? What happens in case the scooter is damaged in shipping? What happens if the scooter does not start? How is the paperwork handled? What happens if the scooter can’t be registered? Are parts available and how to order? How does the warranty work? Do they offer tech support? If any question is not answered, contact them by email or phone. Note that most of these questions would apply to a brick and mortar scooter dealer as well.

Those who do their homework well may also want to research the online scooter brands and dealers in scooter forums. There are many people voicing their opinion, there will be good and bad; just make sure the good is way more than the bad.

Then find a local mechanic that can work on the scooter. After the scooter is assembled, bring it to the mechanic and have it checked over, make sure everything is installed properly.

Keep in mind that most Chinese scooters found online are equivalent or maybe even better quality than a Chinese scooter purchased from a local brick and mortar dealer. The instances of problems out of the box are usually very low; many of the problems are cause by inexperience in starting the scooter and result in a dead battery. It is always a good idea to contact the online dealer’s customer support prior to starting a scooter the first time. This would avoid many problems and complications. Problems that require labor to resolve happen even less. In the majority of cases, the out of pocket cost to the customer is less than $100; far less than dealer’s markup.

So you pull up to the gas pumps and start to fill up your SUV. As the pump’s price displays hits $117.42 you begin to wonder if you should head down to the bank and take out a loan!

Or you can go with a long-time favorite like the Vespa, that can run from $3,300 for a 50CC LX, to $6,000 for the faster and bigger Scooter in a 250cc GTS. Larger scooters are also available. Check out the Honda Silver Wing that comes with antilock brakes or try the Suzuki Burgman 650CC. Prices for these can run between $8,000 and $9,000. So, as you can see, there is something for everyone when considering a motor scooter, something for every taste and every pocketbook. Simply determine what your personal budget is, figure out which are already spending for transportation, and you can easily find a price range that is right for you.
